Friday Fictioneers 31st January 2014

Friday has come round again, seems like only a week since the last one. Thanks to Rochelle for this week’s prompt:claire-fuller-2

and here are my 100 words:

Catherine wasn’t the first woman in the company, but she was the first employed as an engineer, not a secretary or cleaner. And she was the first person to complain about the jokes, the whistles, the calendars, the touches.

“Boys will be boys,” the other women shrugged, but Catherine saw their actions differently.

Many years on, the old-fashioned views have gone with the old-fashioned staff. The old workshop, and the estate opened as the company grew, are cleaner, brighter, friendlier. Equal.

She hears applause, the chairman’s announcement. “I give you Catherine Phillips, our new CEO.”

She steps into the spotlight.
