And these are my 100 words:

 

David stood in the doorway, his hands despondently stuffed into his pockets, his confidence and his ambition dented. “I don’t think you’re up to performing this trick with a real assistant yet,” the teacher had joked, nodding to the sawn dummy. There had been smiles, but it had still hurt.

Maybe big magic isn’t your forte, he told himself, but you can do the close stuff. He pulled a pack of playing cards from his pocket, stepped onto the pavement in front of a passing couple.

‘My name’s David,’ he said, his stage presence returning, ‘can you choose a card?’
